Reasons Why Guinea Pigs Make Great Pets


Guinea pig or “cavy”, is a species of rodent belonging to the family Caviidae and the genus Cavia, an exotic pet originated in the Andes of South America.
In this article there are some reasons making guinea pigs great pets.


Guinea pigs are strong and hardy
When cared properly, Guinea pigs are generally very healthy animals, any health conditions can be prevented with proper nutrition and regular medical checkups.

Guinea pigs are social
Guinea pigs are very social animals with humans and with animals of their kind, and they are at their happiest when living with other guinea pigs.

Guinea pigs are easy to care for
They need hay, fresh water, fresh vegetables and a small amount of pelleted food formulated for guinea pigs, plus a vitamin C supplement each day.
They also need a large cage but since guinea pigs are a good size, a homemade cage is a great one.

Guinea pigs are easy to tame
Guinea pigs may be nervous at the first, but they usually become tame very easily only by a consistent gentle handling.
They are unlikely to bite even when stressed.

Guinea pigs are great pets for children
Guinea pigs are wonderful pets for children, not fragile as rabbits less skittish than smaller rodents like hamsters and gerbils.



Guinea pigs live long lives

Guinea pigs live on average around five to seven years, sometimes longer, unlike most hamsters, gerbils and rats that lives only two to three years, on average.
This longer lifespan is important for families to consider if they are thinking of adopting a guinea pig.

Guinea pigs purr!

Guinea pigs make a distinctive wheeking or whistling type sound, a quiet yet audible vibrating sound when they are happy, and often when they are petted gently.
Guinea pigs make many other sounds including “wheeking”, and teeth chattering (when they are angry or aggressive).

Guinea pigs are often available at Shelters
Before buying one of them check shelters because Shelter guinea pigs are generally social and easy going.
Generally they are available at many local Shelters.
